Digital Cabinets

Digital cabinets need careful handling, proper fixing points and enough access for safe installation. Sign Riggers place and secure cabinets supplied by specialist sign makers across Cape Town, Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

Digital Cabinets

What a digital cabinet is and how it is used

A digital cabinet is a rigid sign enclosure that holds digital graphics or illuminated display components in a fixed frame. It is commonly used where a sign maker wants a clean, boxed finish with print, acrylic panels or internal lighting housed inside a protected structure. Our crews place and secure these cabinets only, working to the sign maker’s drawing and fixing method, so the finish stays true to the original brief.

These cabinets are used on shopfronts, forecourts, business parks, industrial gates and roadside sites where the sign needs to stand up to wind, sun and regular public traffic. In coastal areas such as Paarden Eiland, Somerset West and parts of the West Coast, we also account for salt air and fastener corrosion. In Gauteng, heat, dust and high traffic areas mean the fixing detail and access plan need just as much attention.

Common sizes, formats and mounting options

Digital cabinets are made in many sizes, from compact entrance signs to large wall mounted and freestanding units. The exact dimensions depend on the cabinet face, frame depth, internal lighting requirement and whether the unit is fixed to brickwork, steel posts or a prepared support frame. We install cabinets supplied by specialist sign makers in standard and custom sizes, with the fixing method set out before we arrive on site.

  • Small wall cabinets: often from 600 x 400 mm up to around 1200 x 600 mm
  • Medium shopfront cabinets: commonly 1200 x 600 mm to 2400 x 1200 mm
  • Large format cabinets: custom built for forecourts, depots and roadside visibility
  • Single sided or double sided formats, depending on viewing direction
  • Wall mounted, post mounted or frame supported installations

Depth can vary from shallow display units to deeper illuminated cabinets. A typical installed depth may range from about 100 mm to 250 mm, but larger units can be deeper where the sign face, wiring and access space require it. If the cabinet includes removable faces or access panels, we check that there is enough clearance for future maintenance too.

Where digital cabinets suit best

Digital cabinets suit sites that need a tidy, enclosed sign with strong visibility and regular brand updates. They work well for retail frontages, showrooms, vehicle entrances, fuel sites, office parks, schools and medical facilities. They are also useful where the sign maker wants a consistent sign family across several branches in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Because the cabinet is enclosed, it gives better protection to internal components than an exposed assembly. That makes it a practical option for sites with high foot traffic, wind exposure or frequent cleaning. It also suits locations where a municipality or landlord requires a neater face finish and controlled projection from the wall. We often see these used in Sandton, Midrand, Bellville and Paarl where the sign has to read cleanly from a distance but still fit strict site rules.

  • Retail centres and street-facing shopfronts
  • Industrial parks and warehouse entrances
  • Fuel stations and forecourt canopy edges
  • Corporate campuses and reception facades
  • Schools, clinics and public service buildings

Installation, access and power requirements

Our crews manage the handling, placement and fixing of digital cabinets, including lift planning, scaffold access and platform work where needed. Before installation we confirm the fixing surface, the weight of the cabinet, the access route and the lifting point. For heavier units, or where the cabinet must be set above a canopy or on a high wall, we plan the job around wind conditions, road access and any working-at-height restrictions. No site is worth rushing, so we plan the lift properly first.

Most digital cabinets need a stable power point close to the final position, and some units may require conduit, weatherproof isolators or a dedicated circuit arranged by the sign maker or electrical contractor. If the cabinet is illuminated, we allow for cable entry, water sealing and enough slack for future servicing. Gas is not normally part of a standard digital cabinet, though any special sign build that includes gas filled elements must be specified up front so the installation method can be checked against the manufacturer’s instructions and site safety rules.

  • Fixed to brick, concrete, steel or prepared support frames
  • Installed with approved anchors, brackets and sealant as specified
  • Access planned for ladders, scaffold, platform or cherry picker
  • Power route checked before final fixing to avoid rework
  • Weather sealing reviewed for coastal and high rain areas

Care, servicing and long term upkeep

Digital cabinets benefit from routine checks, especially on busy sites and in coastal air. Fasteners can loosen over time, seals can age and faces can pick up dirt or storm marks. In Johannesburg, vibration from traffic and dust can affect the finish too. We offer servicing visits for sign makers who need a crew to inspect the cabinet, tighten fixings, replace worn sealant or assist with face changes and access work.

Servicing can include checking frame alignment, confirming that all mounting points are secure, cleaning accessible surfaces and reporting any wear before it becomes a bigger fault. For illuminated cabinets, we can assist with access to lamps, modules or wiring points if the sign maker requests it. If a cabinet has to be removed for repair, we handle the lift out and reinstallation in a controlled way so the sign shop can focus on the repair and not the rigging.

What to check before you order a cabinet

The best installations start with the right details on the order. We work to the sign maker’s instructions, but the site still needs checking before the cabinet is built or delivered. That includes the final size, weight, fixing surface, viewing height and whether the unit must be installed in one piece or in sections. If the cabinet is to be mounted in a tight site, make sure access gear can reach it and that there is room for the crew to work safely.

It also helps to confirm the local rules. Some malls, business parks and municipal areas have restrictions on projection, brightness, working hours or street occupancy. In busy centres like Johannesburg CBD or Sandton, loading and access windows can be short. In Paarden Eiland and along the coastal strip, wind and corrosion should be factored in from the start. A few minutes spent checking these points can save a lot of back and forth later.

  • Final cabinet dimensions and total weight
  • Fixing surface and anchor type
  • Power location, circuit details and cable entry point
  • Access method for installation and future servicing
  • Any municipal, landlord or centre management requirements
  • Installation date, site hours and parking or loading limits

Sign makers use us for the rigging, not the sign sale

Sign Riggers works for sign makers who need an experienced crew to install, remove or service a digital cabinet without competing for the client relationship. We stay on the rigging side of the job, from site surveys and lift planning to final fixing and emergency callouts. That means the sign shop keeps control of the product, the design and the client relationship, while we handle the access and the safe placement on site.

With teams based in Paarden Eiland and Johannesburg, we cover the Western Cape and Gauteng with practical support for cabinet work in Bellville, Somerset West, Paarl, Johannesburg CBD, Sandton, Midrand and the East Rand. If your cabinet needs careful handling, proper access and a crew that understands sign installation in real conditions, we are set up for exactly that kind of work.

Questions we get asked

Do you supply the digital cabinet itself?

We place and secure digital cabinets supplied by specialist sign makers. We do not compete with the sign shop supplying the product.

Can you install cabinets at height or on difficult sites?

Yes. We plan scaffold access, platform work and lift requirements as needed, then install to the agreed fixing method and site conditions.

What should be ready before installation day?

Have the final cabinet size, weight, fixing details, power point and site access confirmed. Any landlord or municipal requirements should also be checked first.
